For us, that's Lake Tahoe. Steve made a little spending money doing a side project, and while it would have been fun to take a weekend trip to somewhere exotic like Maui, Cabo, or Cancun, a lack of direct flights from Reno made that unrealistic. Instead, we decided to become full blown South Lake Tahoe tourists for the first and possibly last time. We got a lake view suite at the Hard Rock Hotel, procured some Lake Tahoe paraphernalia, dined at unique restaurants, and experienced an exhilarating zip-lining adventure.

Dining in a relatively small lakeside tourist town means that there are many unique restaurants to choose from. The first night, we chose to reminisce on our one year anniversary trip to Greece by going to Artemis Lakefront Cafe. As tasty as it was, it did not compare to authentic Greek food. Nevertheless, it was nice to walk down memory lane. Then, we ventured to Baked Bear, which is a custom ice cream sandwich dealer. I use the word dealer because the likelihood of becoming addicted and consequently morbidly obese is dangerously high. This is a restaurant where you can have three different types of ice cream sandwiched between two cookies, different types of cookies, brownies, or a brownie on one side and a cookie on the other - there really are no rules. It's the wild west of ice cream sandwiches! Another restaurant we found that served eclectic vegetarian options was Freshies.

Since we were tourists, we thought it a must to patronize Heavenly resort. Tralina had never been in the Gondola at Heavenly before. We had seen advertisements for Heavenly's summer activities and thought that a zip-lining tour would be right up our alley. Zip-lining in highly regulated California had some noticeable differences from laid back Costa Rica. For example, gopros mounted on helmets are not allowed for some unknown safety reason, the gloves were more than just modified gardening gloves, there were two cables to each zip line instead of one, and it's mandatory to stop before getting to the end platform. Nevertheless, we completely enjoyed our experience. Tralina's favorite was the 1,530 foot long zip line that flies over a small lake and can clock in at up to 45 mph. For once in her recent life, she actually enjoyed the feeling of flying. Steve's favorite part was pushing away from the platform on the final rappel when he spun awkwardly in an arc, causing one of the guides to exclaim with surprise. It was exciting and surprising for Steve, too! We also spent some time on an intense ropes course that Steve fully enjoyed and Tralina not so much due to her well-developed fear of heights.

Overall, it was a fun trip. We enjoyed being Lake Tahoe tourists; the lake view from our room's balcony was visually scrumptious; the food was thoroughly palatable; and the zip-lining and ropes course were dreadfully exciting. And now, we must hang up our gear until the next Oxley Adventure.

Fourth of July Weekend, 2017

It had been a while since Tralina met up with her old roomie from Norway and Washington. In fact, it had been three years and two months, so we planned a trip to Vancouver, WA to see one of Tralina’s best friends, Kristen, and her boyfriend, Ryan. We got in late Friday night and were welcomed by Kristen in the mansion where she currently resides. The house is so large that it has its very own ballroom, lap pool, elevator, and sauna, among many other fancy features. (It’s for sale, too, so you should check it out if you’re interested.

Sabbath morning we swung by the residence where Tralina and Kristen roomed together during the college year of 2009-2010, then we headed over to the Rockwood SDA Church to hear our friend, Manlio, preach. He is an excellent preacher! We then ate lunch at another friend’s house and enjoyed catching up with her and her family. Afterwards, we headed up the Columbia River Gorge for an exploration of Oneonta Gorge. It was refreshing to hike up a river, yet exciting to hike up a very narrow gorge that lies directly on a fault line. Things are always shifting in there and a rock even fell from the top of the gorge right in front of one of the other hikers! We marveled at the huge waterfall at the end of the gorge before turning back to wade through the chilly water. We spent the evening at Ryan’s mom’s new home and made homemade vegan ice cream.

On Sunday the guys played basketball at a men’s church basketball meet-up. Steve especially loved this since we don’t have an organized group like that at our church here in Reno. After the guys were pooped, we started out on our actual plan for the day-- kayaking at Lake Merwin.
This was a fun adventure because we ventured into an inlet and at the end of the inlet discovered cascade waterfalls! Ryan and Kristen did not even know this waterfall existed because the lake bottom usually is a little too shallow for motor boats to propel through.
There was a little beach on the side right before the waterfalls, so we beached our kayaks and hiked up some boulders only to discover even MORE waterfalls further up! If we would have had time, I think we all would have liked to do a little exploring and hike up to the upper waterfalls in an attempt to see if there were more waterfalls even further up. It was quite unexpected to see the waterfalls, and it made the trip all the more memorable.

Monday was a bit more relaxing as we made a big breakfast at Ryan’s apartment, then toured the Vancouver Library, showed Steve my old campus, Clark College, popped in to say hello to Kristen’s mom, then went into Portland to taste some Salt & Straw ice cream. Their ice cream is made from all local ingredients and some of the flavors can get pretty intimidating! For example, Strawberry Honey Balsamic w/ Black Pepper, or Goat Cheese Marionberry Habanero. Here’s a link for the full description of their outlandish flavors. We then headed back into the Columbia River Gorge to take a vertical hike up Beacon Rock. It’s only 0.9 miles long, but it’s straight up the remaining cinder cone of an old volcano, so one definitely gets their sweat on! Steve had never hiked Beacon Rock before, so it was a must for this trip.

There were many other details of this trip that we enjoyed, but for lack of time (and your attention), we have shared only the highlights. It was so good to spend some time with my (Tralina) old roomie and take a little time to walk down memory lane and show Steve some of my old places. We had a blast with both Ryan and Kristen and wish we lived closer so we could hang out more often! The temptation to move to Washington State is strong! But for now, we must hang up our gear until the next Oxley Adventure.
